pre-menopausal

I too just found this board and am happy I can ask questions more suitable for +50.   My surgery is scheduled for June 25.  I am pre-menopausal and occasionally have missed, irregular or long bouts of heavy periods and I tend to get tired easily during that time.  I am a little worried that my time might come on the day of or around the surgery date and my blood might be too low.  Has this happened to anyone here?  Might they postpone my surgery if this happens?  Has anyone had this experience?  Thanks,  ~m

Hi Michele, Welcome and congrats on your big day coming!  Your blood may not be low but your iron can be..try to drink you extra water and take iron supplements everyday and/or spinach, red meat, whole grains, etc to keep you iron levels up during your cycle. This will hopefully prevent any anemia that would normally happen during your cycle. Good time to find some good vitamin supplements to take regularly. Good luck on your surgery!! Alice

Michele, I am sorry that I can't help you with the problem of the periods since I went through medical menepause about 15 years ago.  I just wanted to welcome to our OFF family. The people here are all so nice and informative. They can answer any questions you might have. We laugh together, cry together and everything inbetween. We all just love, love and laugh through life with an occaisional tear or two along the way. We are all a big happy family and I think of everyone as my sisters and brothers. We have a common thread that binds us together. A bind that we don't have with others. Again welcome, and please post often so we can get to know you and you us.  Congratulations on your upcoming new life. It is going to be so fun. You learn so much aoout life and yourself. You begin to see things so differently. I was 54 when I had my surgery and would it all over again in a New York heatbeat.

It's not what you gather, but what you scatter
that tells what kind of life you have lived.

Gee thanks for the welcome everyone.  I have already pre-registered at the hospital and completed all my paperwork and bloodwork and questionnaire and they asked about medications, vitamins, supplements, etc.  They know about this but situation but I still wonder about it myself???   I am already on Optifast (they want me to shrink my liver before surgery then 4 days before just clear liquids).  I am so worried my period might start a few days before the operation and sometimes it can be very draining.    I just want to be at my optimum the day of the big event so I can pull through smoothly.  Just a little worried.  My period might not even come ... it has been so sporadic unpredictable for the past 6-8 months.  It drives me crazy.  I'll be glad when it goes away forever.  ~m

Hi Michele, Welcome to the OFF.  I was in the same predicament.  My period was due on the day of surgery.  It never came.  In fact it took over 100 days to get here and YUCKO!!   I informed the nurses at my doctor's office and they said it wasn't a problem.  Also informed the hospital nurses, and they said it wasn't a problem.  So it isn't a problem.  Just be prepared and remember, you will have a catheter in. Good luck to you, and if you are really concerned, and you have a couple weeks, ask your gyn for the med that brings your cycle on quicker and get it out of the way. Hugs, Lora

I would say that unless it's impossible to get a period you should expect to have or get one at your WLS.  Many women who aren't even due for one get one provoked by surgery.  Don't know why?  I had just finished my period a week before and I'm pretty regular so I figured "good that's out of the way".  Didn't think I would even have anything to get one in there.  About day two post-op I got a period.  It lasted, and it lasted for about two weeks (not at all normal for me).  The message from me is don't sweat it!  Hospitals deal with it and every other body function every day.  It won't stop the surgery or post-pone it.  You might want to pack pads and loose undies that would hold the pad, cause I seem to remember being given those old ones that have a belt (from my mom's day).  Good luck.  June 25th for you!!!
